Congress vote happening: Patriot Act Renewal?

Dear Fellow Patriots,

It is of my notion and many others, including one Senator Rand Paul, that the Patriot Act should be ended.    Today (Tues. 2-8-11) in the House, the Patriot Act renewal (HR. 514) attempt was closely defeated by several new (Tea Party) Republicans who stood up to do what is right!    We likely have a battle on our hands here.

I urge all Tea Party Patriots and fellow American Citizens to consider this mark and offense against the 4th Amendment (to do WARRANTLESS wire taps, etc.) and other liberties that was never meant to be so.    As it is time overdue that the government retract this offense against Americans liberties.

Following here is:  1) A call to action    2) AP article on HR 514 defeat   3)  Earlier WSJ article calling out Tea Party

Dear fellow Patriot,

The Patriot Act is scheduled to sunset in a matter of weeks (Feb. 28th) but the statists in D.C. plan to reauthorize it as soon as tomorrow (Tues. 2-8-11) without any debate.

You see, they’re taking advantage of a parliamentary trick known as the Suspension Calendar which allows votes with no hearings and no debate but is only supposed to be used for “non-controversial” legislation.

However, this move requires 2/3rds of the House — which is why the bill was defeated here. However those who intended on slipping this by the American People with little notice want more and more govt power and expansion and once such expansion is made never to retract its wrongness. And so this is likely not over.

That’s why you and I need to take action right now!

Please call the Congressional Switchboard at 202-224-3121.Note: Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) is on the Homeland Security Committee. Other members of this committee should be found and contacted as well.

Reauthorization of the mis-named Patriot Act gives government overreaching powers violating the Constitution’s 4th Amendment.

The Patriot Act was whipped up and passed with no debate in the aftermath hysteria of 9/11.

This abuse against American’s liberty was promised to be sunset and retracted and should be done so as it has run its course –NOT keep extending this overreach of power year after year after year…

As well the Patriot Act provides the increasingly political potential of abuse to eavesdrop, suppress political opponents and squelch freedom of speech and other liberties such as gun ownership by implicating fear that Citizens are being monitored.

Worth mentioning here is the rather loose report or decree once put forward by the Dept. of Homeland Security (later retracted) trying to classify veterans, gun owners or persons speaking out on certain issues as “Radical Extremists” and even “Domestic Terrorists.”  This report was then tried to be shuffled out to local law enforcement.  As can be seen here, the potential for enormous misuse of the Patriot Act — which is anything but Patriotic.

Given the vast size of the U.S. government with its many agencies, it is well known that one agency has no idea what another agency is doing and many times refuses to collaborate together. And so an agency or governmental officials could conduct warrantless wiretaps or other intrusive surveillance with no oversight and where Americans have no assurance or notion that they could be getting surveillanced for whatever.

Some of the very worst provisions of the Patriot Act include:

Roving, warrantless wiretaps of virtually EVERY form of electronic communication used by U.S. citizens

Secret federal searches without warrants OR knowledge of the resident.

Blanket warrants for the search and seizure of all library records, without naming individual suspects or providing probable cause.

Judicial warrants replaced with “National Security Letters” signed by unaccountable Obama Administration bureaucrats and gag orders for those served with these letters which make it illegal to tell anyone about it — including your spouse and your priest!

Drastic expansion of the definition of “domestic terrorism,” which is sure to include gun owners

Expands asset seizure to permit the taking of assets from anyone “suspected” of terrorism, even if that person is NEVER charged or sent to trial.

Lone wolf provisions which allow the government to spy on ANYONE even if they’re not associated with a terrorist organization or foreign national, without due process or notification.

That’s why you and I need to take action right now!

1 Response to Congress vote happening: Patriot Act Renewal?

  1. Ron King says:

ALERT — Patriot Act Renewal brought right back up for vote again today (2-10-11). Open to or would like to hear other tea party members views about this. Should we continue the Patriot Act? To say, per se the country is not safe enough yet? Well, then how long? There are some who want this Federal power overreach to be made permanent. Ben Franklin stated,”Those who wish to give up Liberty in the name Security, will get neither”. The Patriot Act is a serious offense against the 4th Amendment. It is mine and many others contention along with the Founding Fathers that there simply has to be a check or oversight or warrant to carry out such surveillance. Is the Patriot Act now becoming more of a political cover for Congressmen in case there is another attack? Is the Federal Govt using terrorism as an excuse to do whatever it wants –per se impose a police state or worse so “transform” the U.S. Nation? One other thing here is that the American People should not stand for being fear mongered or media hyped (“terrorized”) into believing the Patriot Act (or govt to be trusted) is just an OK action to not be questioned. Well, there are many arguments to go into here, too long to list here at this time. Open to discussion.

The following is the alert I received from Campaign for Liberty: If you feel compelled to make calls please do so.

    February 9, 2011

    Dear Fellow Patriot,

You could hear the arms breaking all the way from Capitol Hill to here in North Carolina as victory slipped out of the statists’ grasp.

Tuesday night, the U.S. House DEFEATED legislation to extend three of the so-called “PATRIOT” Act’s controversial provisions.

Because the bill was put on the “Suspension Calendar,” it needed 290 votes to pass.

Thanks to the quick action of true Patriots, however, the vote failed 277-148.

Remember that the legislation was expected to easily pass. Don’t let anyone ever tell you it’s hopeless to fight for your freedoms.

Here are the North Carolina U.S. Representatives who voted the wrong way:

Voted the wrong way (for extension)

    (2) Renee Ellmers (202) 225-4531 – (Click here to email)
    (5) Virginia Foxx (202) 225-2071 – (Click here to email)
    (6) Howard Coble (202) 225-3065 – (Click here to email)
    (7) Mike McIntyre (202) 225-2731 – (Click here to email)
    (8) Larry Kissell (202) 225-3715 – (Click here to email)
    (9) Sue Myrick (202) 225-1976 – (Click here to email)
    (10) Patrick McHenry (202)225-2576 – (Click here to email)
    (11) Heath Shuler (202) 225-6401 – (Click here to email)
    (13) Brad Miller (202) 225-3032 – (Click here to email)

Contact your rep and let them know what you think about them voting for the Bill of Rights-shredding PATRIOT Act.

This fight is only beginning. The three provisions expire on February 28, so this is not the last you and I will hear of extending them.

You and I have kept the pressure on Congress, but now we have to turn it up.

Contact your rep using the information above and remind them of their oath to uphold the Constitution. Urge them to put the American People’s rights before the surveillance state’s power by rejecting the “PATRIOT” Act on every vote.

Also could call Speaker Boehner (202) 225-6205
Rep. Peter King (Homeland Security Committee) – (202) 225-7896

The are the following 8 Republicans (new Tea Party influenced) that voted NO on renewal (and stood up for the Constitution):

    Woodall (R-GA) 202-225-4272
    Graves (R-GA) 202-225-5211
    Hultgren (R-IL) 202-225-2976
    Labrador (R-ID) 202-225-6611
    Schwietzkert (R-AZ) 202-225-2190
Gibson (R-NY) 202-225-5614 (an Army veteran that served in Iraq)
    Fitzpatrick (R-PA) 202-225-4276
    Amash (R-MI) 202-225-3831
