On Monday, 9/30, the following happened:
Vote to Table the budget (CR) #1:
The Senate voted 54 / 46 (yes/no) to table (kill) HR.59 – Continuing Resolution (CR aka kick-the-can-down-the-road federal budget) with Obamacare defunding from the House. Next vote in the Senate is at 4pm. What now? Is the govt now going to shutdown, or is there another meaningful vote after 4pm?
To clarify: the Senate didn’t vote on the CR, they voted on whether or not they should “Table”, set aside indefinitely, the CR. They vote YES to Table the bill. They killed the CR.
Vote to Table the budget (CR) #2:
The Senate rejected a CR that 1) fully funded the federal government, 2) had a one-year delay of individual mandate of Obamacare, and 3) elimination of medical device tax.
Vote to Table the budget (CR) #3:
House sent another CR to the Senate on Monday evening that 1) fully funded the government, and 2) forced the House members, the members of the Senate, and their staffs to enroll in the Obamacare Exchanges. It’s only fair they should live by the same rules they are forcing us to live by. Again the Senate didn’t bring the CR to the floor for a vote, they voted to table/kill it.
Harry Reid said we will not negotiate. So, who shut the government down? Who hasn’t produced a federal budget since 2007? The President, US Senate, and their Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). That’s who.
This is the 18th federal government shutdown since 1976. There were 12 government shutdowns under Reagan.
US Senate last passed a federal budget in 2007 under the Bush Administration. They didn’t pass one in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and nothing in 2013 yet. America has been running on CR’s.
So we still have social security being sent out, still have the post office delivering mail, air traffic control, U.S. military members still being paid, congress still gets paid – but no EPA!?!?! I declare this government shutdown to be the most effective spending reduction the Republican House has been able to accomplish! Bravo! – hat tip to Nicole Revels
