Lt. Governor Dan Forest’s 30-page letter to Superintendent of Public Instruction, June Atkinson, full of questions. Lt. Gov Forest tried to ask these questions in meetings, but she was evasive or just didn’t know the answers. He thought is was important enough to put them in writing so as to guarantee answers to these questions. The letter asked numerous questions about costs, standards, curriculum. Her response was 40,000 pages, used a lot of words, but didn’t really answer the questions.

News Observer article about June Atkinson 40,00-page response to Dan Forest. “If the Lieutenant Governor, who is a member of the State Board of Education, has questions dismissed in this manner, imagine what will happen this school year when an individual parent or teacher asks these same questions,” he said. “It is unclear to me, why a Department that is supposed to promote the Common Core Standards is hiding behind mountains of information and not offering clear, concise, common sense responses to very reasonable questions.”

My questions about Common Core:
What is happening with all the student personal data? Is is secure?
Why is a federal one-size-fits-all education system appropriate for all American students? In general adults, and especially children, do not learn in the same way, so why would we force all to learn in the same way? Why are federal standards being pushed down on children with such daily time restraints that there is no room left for spontaneous learning? There is no room for critical thinking, but hours of liberally biased information to memorize about Climate Change and why America is bad.
Common Core has “rigorous academics” they say. Not necessarily rigorous, just developmentally inappropriate.
Even though the NC General Assembly passed a law adopting Common Core, any local school districts can opt out the program and implement their own curriculum. That is a fact. So when the local school board tells us ‘their hands are tied, they have to adopt Common Core curriculum, standards and testing’, they are wrong.
