Rep. Edgar Starnes retired 1/13/15 to take a position with NC STATE TREASURER JANET COWELL (D) as Legislative Liason. The new person must take the seat by 1/27/15 for an important vote. Caldwell County GOP (CCGOP) is having a closed door Executive Committee meeting “soon” to vote on the appointee. The CCGOP didn’t want to discuss this issue at their last regularly scheduled meeting on 1/13/15, even through all parties were present.
Edgar Starnes’ a seat is up for grabs and will be decided by the CCGOP Executive Committee members. Their recommendation will go to Gov. McCrory for appointment.
So far, Marilyn Starnes, George Robinson, Wayne Rash, and Destin Hall are all vying for the appointment.
Marilyn Starnes was a long time staffer for Senator Jessie Helms. She has loads of policy experience. She is the supportive wife of Edgar Starnes.
George Robinson was an NC House member when it was controlled by Democrats, and there were few Republicans in Raliegh. He caucused with Democrats. Campaigned hard against Sen. Dan Soucek (R) and is rumored to have convinced Jim Sponenberg (D) to run against Soucek last year. (Remember that debate where Sponenberg stopped taking the microphone late in the evening saying, “I agree with Senator Soucek,” basically, move on.)
Wayne Rash has been the fair-minded young leader in the Caldwell County GOP, sits on the NCGOP State Executive Committee, elected Caldwell County Register of Deeds since 2004, and the President of the NC Register of Deeds Association (not sure if that is the proper name of the organization or not). He is so well liked in this county, he is often the County Convention Chair.
Destin Hall, called my mom Sunday to introduce himself. He lives, and is registered to vote, in Caldwell County, and is an attorney in Charlotte. Born and raised in Lenoir. AppState grad and Wake Forrest Law School grad.
Can’t wait to hear how this works out.
